The 2018 INROADS Learning Development Institute was a 3-day conference hosted by Proctor & Gamble and FedEx that took place in Cincinnati, Ohio. It was a gathering of INROADS interns not only from the U.S. but all over the world. These interns represented the diversity and unity that INROADS strive to unleash into the workforce. We were all here under one purpose and had all arrived from different paths and journeys. As leaders of the future, we embarked in thoughtful dialogue about our passions, careers, ethnicities, and our most importantly our future. With over 300+ interns present, it was indeed 3-days full of networking and meaningful bonds forging friendships across the continent and oceans alike. The best part of events like the INROADS LDI is that we are surrounded by like-minded and driven individuals. We were given the opportunity to meet with alumni, proud and successful people of color who understand what perseverance is and rose above a society that at many times, hinder our community. During the LDI we attended various workshops that touched on the topics below.
“The network you need for the job you want.”
Attitudes of a Leader:
During this workshop we described what a leader is. We decided that good leaders have DRIVE, HUMULITY, and EMPATHY, in which they are ADVOCATES that do mind giving recognition where recognition is due.
“Ability → Capability
Motivation → What You Do
Attitude → How You Do It”
Our attitude is defined by our non-verbal ques as well as our verbal ones.
From College to Career:
In this workshop, the pathway to a successful career was likened to driving a car.
1. Adjusting your “Rearview Mirrors”: Accessing where you were.
2. Your Default Seat: Where you are today.
3. Spotting your “Blind Spot(s)”: What is holding you back.
4. “Key Features” of your car: What is keeping you going, skills and attributes.
5. “Target Goal(s)” and Destination: Where do you want to be.
Although many of our target goals were different, we found that we shared many fears and anxiety about that paths we were embarking and how grateful we are for the opportunity to add INROADS to our “Key Features”.
My Digital Footprint:
A digital footprint is ANY data generated about you.
A digital brand is INTENTIONAL data about you generated by you.
During this workshop, we googled ourselves. Some found that they were easily searchable and others barely noticeable. Likewise, some found that more then they wanted could be found while others were put at ease that their online identity had at least some privacy, as we all know that once something is online it can never be erased. Afterwards, we created websites that showcased our brand, in the image that we want to be. We used the online platform Weebly which had just as many themes to accommodate the multitudes of personalities and styles we want to be perceived as. Some of our websites were created to be clean and straightforward, others were warm and inviting, while some were playful but serious. These themes helped give platforms to create a holistic image of ourselves that embodied our careers, hobbies, goals, and life.
